Everybody Rides: Bikeshare For All

On May 6, ICT, Inc. hosted an event at the Platform to celebrate the Everybody Rides program, which was launched as part of the Indiana Pacers Bikeshare in 2014 to make sure everyone in the downtown Indianapolis community, regardless of income level, is aware of the benefits and has access to the quick and easy transportation offered by Indiana Pacers Bikeshare, a program of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Inc.

Accessible, Affordable Transportation

What began as a pilot program in Barton Towers and Barton Annex has now been expanded to several of the downtown Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) properties; IU Health recently partnered with ICT, Inc. to help support the expansion and purchase 100 helmets. EveryBody Rides allows IHA residents in the downtown area to receive a discounted price of $10 for an annual membership (regularly $80).

ICT, Inc. Program Manager Lauren Day and Khira Miller, Bikeshare Partnership Development AmeriCorp Public Ally, address the group at the May 6 Everybody Rides event.

Khira Miller, the Bikeshare Partnership Development AmeriCorp Public Ally, has been the main liaison with the Barton Tower and other IHA residents and held nine informational sessions for residents over the last six months. She said that Everybody Rides ensures access to affordable transportation, promotes healthy living and increases participation in the transformation of Downtown Indianapolis culture.

“Bikeshare is great because there is no wait time for a bike like for other forms of public transportation. It provides transportation and exercise for a healthier lifestyle. It is the perfect option for running errands and doing quick trips around downtown.” she said.

Greg Kormos, an Everybody Rides member, tells the group about his bikeshare experience at the celebration.

Greg Kormos, an Everybody Rides member for almost a year, is a strong proponent of the program. He said, “I’ve found that I’m attending events and shopping with an ease and economy just not possible by bus or car. Plus, the exercise makes it a win-win situation.”

Protected Bike Lanes for Safe Travel

Pacers Bikeshare stations are located on or close to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which provides a protected bike lane for those less comfortable or new to biking. “Residents can go most anywhere they want downtown on the Trail, and they don’t have to worry about heavy car traffic,” said Miller.

EveryBody Rides follows the same guidelines as the the Indiana Pacers Bikeshare with unlimited 30 minutes rides. Be sure to check the bike in every half hour to avoid any additional usage fees.
