“It’s not about the destination, it’s the journey that counts,” said someone famous. With the Indianapolis Cultural Trail connecting 3 of downtown Indianapolis’ unique PUBLIC spaces, we like to think it’s the journey and the destination that make our city unique. Go, enjoy!

Indianapolis Cultural Trail Connection

Use the Trail to see the network of downtown Indy’s dynamic public spaces:
  1. Lugar Plaza
  2. Downtown Canal Walk
  3. Georgia Street

1. Lugar Plaza

Find it: Along Washington Street between Delaware and Alabama Street, across the street from downtown Indy’s Julia M. Carson Transit Center.

How to get there: Already downtown, it’s a short walk or bike-ride away! Take a bus to downtown Indy’s Julia M. Carson Transit Center or ride Pacers Bikeshare to the station at the corner of Deleware and Washington Street. Driving? There is metered street parking available on the surrounding block.

While you’re there: 

  • Enjoy the FREE wifi
  • Find the swings and let them rock you.
  • Check out a Pacers Bikeshare and ride along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
  • Learn about art and history.
  • Look UP – check out the City skyline.
  • Check out our event calendar for FREE programs and events throughout the year!

2. Downtown Canal

Find it: Senate Street & Walnut Street along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail

How to get there: Already downtown? Ride, walk, or bike! Driving? There is metered street parking available on surrounding streets, and an IndyGo line with stops a few blocks away.

While you’re there: 

  • Walk or run this scenic linear park!  It’s generally a ~3 mile or 5k roundtrip with no street crossings or stops so it’s the perfect destination for those looking to log some miles.
  • Take your dog to our FREE Pawp-Up Pup Park for some off-leash space and socialization.
  • Grab Pacers Bikeshare or BYOBike and enjoy a leisurely ride.
  • Enjoy the Colts Canal Playspace – downtown’s largest and newest playground.
  • Find a place to lay out a blanket and enjoy a book, magazine, or board game.
  • Use it as a route to visit some of Indy’s historical places and cultural institutions.
  • Try Curling! Curling on the Canal is open from now until March 2024.
  • Check out our calendar to see the FREE programs and events offered year round on the Canal.

3. Georgia Street

Find it: Connects to the Cultural Trail on Capitol Avenue and spans Georgia Street from Capitol Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue

How to get there:  Driving? There are a few nearby parking garages for Circle Center Mall that are very convenient for Georgia Street Access.  There is street parking available on surrounding streets, and an IndyGo bus stop only a few blocks away.

While you’re there: 

  • Visit one of the restaurants lining the street.
  • Sit down on a bench and look up – lots of great architecture here.
  • Grab a friend, a drink, and catch-up on life.
  • Walk to your favorite event at Lucas Oil, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, or Convention Center.
  • Learn about Hoosiers who have made a mark on history.
  • Explore this urban walkway, created when Indy hosted the SuperBowl in 2012.
