Indy Solar Stroll

Explore the galaxy and Indianapolis with Indy Solar Stroll, a temporary and immersive installation along roughly 1.3 miles of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene and Marilyn Glick. The scale model of the Solar System from the Sun to Pluto is located along Virginia Ave.

Designed in partnership with Visit Indy to celebrate the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, this unique experience invites visitors to walk, run, or bike while they explore planets as well as Indianapolis’ Wholesale and Fountain Square Cultural Districts. Don’t miss this limited-time opportunity to journey through space along the beautiful Cultural Trail!

  • The Sun: Virginia Ave. and Prospect St.
  • Mercury: Virginia Ave. between Prospect St. and Woodlawn Ave.
  • Venus: Virginia Ave. between Prospect St. and Woodlawn Ave.
  • Earth: Virginia Ave. between Prospect St. and Woodlawn Ave.
  • Mars: Virginia Ave. between south of Woodlawn Ave.
  • Jupiter: Virginia Ave. between Leonard & Buchanan St.
  • Saturn: Virginia Ave. at I-65/I-70 near the The Idle Park
  • Uranus: Virginia Ave. across from Lexington St.
  • Neptune: Virginia Ave. north of Louisiana St.
  • Pluto: Virginia Ave. south of Washington St.

Where is the Start?

Participants can choose to either start at the Sun in Fountain Square, near the intersection of Virginia Ave. and Prospect St, and journey to the former ninth planet OR they can start at Pluto in Downtown, near Virginia Ave. and Washington St., and travel to the center of the solar system.

What is the Route?

Indy Solar Stroll is approximately 1.3 miles on the world-class Indianapolis Cultural Trail generally along Virginia Ave. The Sun is located in the heart of Fountain Square near the intersection of Prospect St. and Virginia Ave. while Pluto is located at Washington St. and Virginia Ave.

Other Things to See Along the Route

Be sure to look up to see Swarm Street, located on Virginia Ave. as the Trail passes under a parking garage south of Maryland St., an interactive piece in Indianapolis Cultural Trail’s public art collection that provide the effect of a glimmering night’s sky. Other public art is also visible from this spur of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

Indy Solar Stroll traverses  through both the historic Fountain Square and Wholesale Cultural Districts as well as the Fletcher Place neighborhood. There are plenty of local restaurants, cafes, shops, and other businesses just steps from the Solar Stroll to explore.

Accessibility

The entirety of the Solar Stroll is fully accessible.

Parking

Street parking in Fountain Square is free. Paid street parking is available downtown on Washington, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and South St.  It’s is paid Monday- Saturday, and FREE on Sundays.  Additionally, several nearby paid parking lots and garages are also open to the public. Getting to Solar Stroll

  • Indianapolis Cultural Trail: Bike, jog, or walk on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail to Indy Solar Stroll portion. The Cultural Trail connects several downtown hotels, destinations, and neighborhoods.
  • Pacers Bikeshare: Bike to the Solar Stroll using Pacers Bikeshare. 4 stations are conveniently located along the route with another 2 located 1 block away. 
  • Transit: IndyGo has several routes, including the Red Line, that serve this area. The Julia M. Carson Transit Center is 1 block away and there are Red Line Stations along the route as well. 
  • Cars: Street parking in Fountain Square is free. Paid street parking is available downtown on Washington, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and South St.  It’s is paid Monday- Saturday, and FREE on Sundays.  Additionally, several nearby paid parking lots and garages are also open to the public. This FREE beginner-friendly yoga class led by Pure Soul will embrace the darkness and celebrate the rising of the sun with luminous orbs, glow sticks, and special lighting.
