Join us for Trail and Treat on the Canal! This FREE family-friendly event features a safe, well-lit route with several stops to collect treats and do fun activities along the scenic Downtown Canal.
The trick-or-treat has no official start, direction, or order. Go to a few stops or complete them all over the 1.5 mile route! Walk, run, stroll, or bike between each stop with confidence knowing that the route is car-free and well-lit. Information and restrooms are available by the Colts Canal Playspace and Orange Bridge, near the intersection of Walnut St. and Senate Ave.
Trail & Treat is FREE to the public and family (and dog) friendly. Registration is strongly encouraged. Trail & Treat on the Canal is presented by the Indianapolis Cultural Trail with support from the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development and several community partners.

Event Map
The full trick-or-treat route is approximately a 1.5 miles loop. However, there is no official start, direction, or order. Go to a few stops or complete them all over the 1.5 mile route! Walk, run, stroll, or bike between each stop with confidence knowing that the route is car-free and well-lit.
Day & Time
Trail & Treat is Saturday, October 26 from 5-7 PM. You may start at any station and go any direction. The event is self-paced, but activities and trick-or-treat is only available between 5-7 PM. This event is rain or shine.
Cost
FREE! There is no cost to participate in Trail & Treat on the Canal and all of the activities along the route. However, please note that face painting and ‘Eerie” Canal boat rides are first come, first serve and may have long lines due to demand. We do ask that you please register ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
Access
The Downtown Indianapolis is only a few feet below ground level, accessible by stairs, ramps or elevators.
- Between 11th and 10th Streets: Ramps and stairs available
- Between St. Clair and Walnut Streets: Ramps and stairs available
- Michigan Street and Indiana Avenue: Elevator (East) and stair access
- Vermont Street: Stairs only
- New York Street (West): Elevator and stair access
- Between New York and Ohio Streets (West): Stairs only
- Between Ohio and West St.: Stairs only
- White River State Park: Ramps and stairs access

Parking
Nearby paid street parking is available on Senate Ave., Indiana Ave., Vermont St., 9th St., and 11th St. We recommend using the Park Mobile App to locate parking, including ADA spots. Additionally, several nearby paid parking lots and garages are also open to the public, including the Stutz Lot A and 9 on Canal. There is NO parking on Walnut St. where it is shared with the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
Getting to the Downtown Canal
- Indianapolis Cultural Trail: The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is a great way to access the Downtown Canal by foot or bike as it conveniently cross it in two locations. Bike parking is located on Walnut St. near the Orange Bridge and Colts Canal Playspace.
- Pacers Bikeshare: Bike to the Downtown Canal using Pacers Bikeshare. With over 50 stations around the City, its convenient to take a bike to one of the three stations along the Canal at the Admiral Spruance Basin (near 10th St.), Walnut St. Basin (near the Orange Bridge and St. Clair St.) and in White River State Park (near Blackford St. and the Indiana State Museum).
- Transit: IndyGo has several routes, including the Red Line, with stops just a few blocks away.
- Cars: The best address to navigate to the Downtown Canal is 701 Canal Walk. Nearby paid street parking is available on Senate Ave., Indiana Ave., Vermont St., 9th St., and 11th St. We recommend using the Park Mobile App. to locate parking, including ADA spots. Additionally, several paid garages and lots are also open to the public, including the Stutz Lot A and 9 on Canal . There is NO parking on Walnut St. where it is shared with the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
Food & Beverage
There will be candy along the route, but if you are looking for something more substantial there are several food and beverage options for purchase available on and along the Canal, including at Fresco Italian Cafe on the Canal.
